In addition to graciously staying on for an extra 30 minutes to answer questions, he made the presentation especially personal and it resonated with our students and alums, many of whom are first-generation college students/grads.”

The best career handbook I’ve ever read?
The Unspoken Rules by Gorick Ng—hands down.
This book should be required reading for anyone navigating the workplace. Whether you’re just starting out or leading from the C-suite, it delivers.
I don’t say that lightly. I’ve read a lot of career books. Some are helpful, some are hype. The Unspoken Rules is in a league of its own.
It’s the kind of book you buy in hardcopy, highlight like crazy, and keep within arm’s reach at your desk.
Why? Because it’s full of actionable, real-world advice—the kind that helps you not just land the job, but excel once you’re in it.
Gorick distilled years of research, real-world experience, and insight into something incredibly accessible. This isn’t fluff. It’s the guide to workplace success I wish I had at the start of my career.
And here’s the thing: it’s not just for early-career professionals. The mindset shifts, behavior cues, and unspoken rules he breaks down are just as relevant at the mid-career or executive level.
Plus, Gorick brings the perfect combo of academic credibility (hello, Harvard) and high-performance business experience. You can tell he’s lived this.
I’m a firm believer that the right book can change your mindset—and your trajectory. This is one of those books. A keeper. A career companion.
Thank you, Gorick, for creating something that will serve generations of professionals to come.
Let’s crowdsource some wisdom—what’s one book you think every professional should read?

Speaking Programs
Fireside Chat/Facilitated Q+A
For all audiences. Have a firm representative facilitate a 60-min live Q&A with Gorick on topics of your choosing. And / or, have Gorick design and moderate a panel with senior leaders of your firm along a theme of your choosing (e.g., how to navigate the unspoken rules of the workplace).

The Ten Year Rule: The Unspoken Rules of Progressing in Your Legal Career
For law firm associates (or other professional services). Many talented associates leave—not due to burnout but due to a perceived lack of career progression. Who stays? Those who’ve mastered the unspoken rules of building, inheriting, and growing a book of business. In this session, Gorick deconstructs the career paths of successful attorneys and the “invisible work” they did, step by step, to build relationships, build a reputation, and “grow the pie,” becoming the firm’s next generation of partners and leaders.

Whispers From the Front Lines: How [Your Firm] Can Attract and Retain Early Career Talent
For HR and talent leadership teams. Want to build your next bench of leaders—but struggling to attract, retain, engage, and promote junior talent? In this interactive session, Gorick analyzes your firm’s talent acquisition, onboarding, and talent development practices from the perspective of your prospective and current front-line employees and then facilitates a discussion and brainstorm with your talent leaders on what your firm can do.

How to Manage More Effectively and Inclusively
For people leaders. People don’t leave companies; they leave managers. Unfortunately, the vast majority of managers get zero training, leading to management through trial and error. In this session, Gorick shares the most common frustrations managers have towards their teams—and how tiny tweaks in one’s management approach can help people leaders help others help themselves.

How to Reach “Level 7 Ownership”
For all audiences (especially individual contributors). What separates star performers from the rest? An ownership mindset. In this session, Gorick demystifies what ownership looks like and sounds like, from “level 1” (how school conditions us to behave) to “level 7” (what star performers do subconsciously) in some of the most common scenarios at work, from asking for help to managing projects.

How to Succeed in a New Internship or Job
For students + interns + early career professionals. Hard skills get you hired, but a lack of soft skills gets you fired. In this workshop, Gorick shows how little things in your first day, week, month, and year can make a big difference in the trajectory of your career.

How to Take Control Of Your Career
For all audiences (especially individual contributors). If you want it, you have to strive for it. If what you want doesn’t exist, you have to create it. If you aren’t sure you can have it, you have to ask for it. In this session, Gorick shares strategies for how to take your career development into your own hands.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Sooner: Reflections From a First-Gen Professional
For talent from underrepresented backgrounds and members of ERGs (Employee Resource Groups). Who are the high performers at your work? Chances are, you're thinking of people who grew up with family or mentors in the white-collar world. How can all of your employees thrive, not just survive? In this session, Gorick shares the tacit-but-not-talked-about career tips he learned as the son of a working-class single mom.

How to Make the Most of Higher Education: Reflections from a First-Gen, Low-Income College Grad
For first-gen college students, low-income students, and other non-traditional students. Look around your campus. Who are your most engaged students? Chances are, the students you are thinking of have family and mentors with a college or advanced degree. How can all of your students persist, graduate, and succeed? In this session, Gorick shares his experiences as a first-gen college student, first-gen MBA, and Harvard career advisor, how he came to navigate the unspoken rules, and the tips he learned along the way.

How Your Work Changes Lives: Reflections From a Grateful First-Gen College Grad Turned First-Gen Professional
For higher-ed faculty and administrators. Your work as a higher education professional is more important than ever as our campuses grow more diverse, with more non-traditional students and students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. In this session, Gorick shares how higher education changed his life as the son of a working-class single mother and offers strategies for faculty and staff to make the “magic” of higher education accessible, empowering students to take charge of their futures.

I just listened to such an insightful and eye opening presentation given by Gorick Ng on his book about career readiness. Thank you to the Hearst Associates team for setting up this meeting for us and giving us a copy of Gorick’s book. He answered great questions and definitely left me thinking about how I’m going to spend my final year in undergrad to prepare me for the next steps in my career. I’m enjoying my time with Hearst so much and I’m only half way through my internship!

Thank you to Gorick Ng for delivering today's insightful keynote presentation, "How to Take Control of Your Career," as part of Best Buy's Career Month programming.
Attendees were inspired by Gorick's story and gained practical tips to empower their career journeys. Personally, I've been a fan of Gorick since his book, "The Unspoken Rules," was released in 2021. His book offers valuable guidance, strategic approaches, and practical wisdom that may be obvious to some, but remain unfamiliar to many, particularly those in the early stages of their careers and those coming from marginalized communities. Having personally acquired many of these essential skills through my personal lived experiences, mentors and self-education, I am passionate about equipping everyone with the necessary tools for success. Gorick's book serves as a solid foundation to empower individuals on their professional journeys.
It was an honor to collaborate with Gorick and bring this presentation to our employees, on behalf of the Young Professionals PDG. I will put the link for Gorick's book and a note about the session recording in the comments.

“The hardest part of being a new associate attorney is figuring out what my job is"—what I've been told by countless law school grads......
but not Stephanie Nye's students! Stephanie Nye teaches Administrative Law Externship, a course where students work 8-15 hours per week with either a state or federal agency. Students graduate with not just legal theory in their heads, but real-world experience on their hands. Go Stephanie Nye!
Thanks to Stephanie Nye (Director of Externship & Special Academic Programs at University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law) for using my book in class and inviting me to share the unspoken rules of succeeding as an early career professional.

We had an awesome Diversity Day presentation today at BakerHostetler, which featured the amazing Gorick Ng, who was one of the most engaging speakers I've seen and also wins the award for most beautiful and efficient slideshow! I'm currently reading his book, The Unspoken Rules: Secrets to Starting Your Career Off Right, and it has been incredibly practical and thought provoking. Definitely worth a read!
We took this group photo, which includes some of my favorite people at BakerHostetler, before the program began. Shout out to Emily Crosby, Leah (Smith) Fisher (she/her/hers) and Emily Spiller for doing the heavy lifting and for inviting me to participate by asking a question at the end of program.
I love working at BakerHostetler for many reasons, including the fact that those at the top are thinking deeply about how to meaningfully address #diversity at our firm. But perhaps more importantly, I love the people that work here and appreciate the way so many have personally invested in my life and my #career (including those pictured below). I am #grateful that BakerHostetler has been a safe place for me to weather the storms of life (including the early dark days of the pandemic) and is an environment that is conducive to my continued growth, both personally and professionally.
